The Material That I Promote…

By mhobach | February 21, 2006

I received an Email from a subscriber to my list asking questions about the programs and systems that I promote.  In particular this Email asked how Anesia Springborn’s “The Landlord System” compared to other “Gurus” that already have made their mark in the information/training circles that we all travel.  I thought that I would share my response to that inquiry as it helps explain my thought process…

There are so many people out there with a system and I tend to look at the person first.  There are many that could care less about the people that buy their programs – they just want to move more units.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to make a living with the things that I have going on online, and maybe in a year or so that would be true.  But for the time being I choose to take care of the people.  I know that if I do this I will have it come back to me 100 times!

As for Anesia compared to the others – I don’t know the others!  I don’t know if their program is better or worse or just the same.  I don’t know if their program will work everywhere – just like everything else.  I do know that Anesia’s program works because although she lives in Arizona, she owns property here in Wisconsin – where she is from and where I live.  I also know that she owns property elsewhere in the country as well.

As we both know this isn’t rocket science – it is just good business.  Unfortunately, many ‘Gurus’ work hard to make it seem like there is something magical that you need to do to make money in Real estate.

I can’t guarantee that we will compare programs as this isn’t the focus of the call.  But I will see if we can cover this some other time – do you have experience with these other systems that you want her stuff compared to?  If so, she is moderating the Property Management Forum for us.  Maybe you can post your questions there – it is a public forum so you might get some input from others as well…

I received a response to this Email asking if I had ever heard of Lou Brown or Jeffery Taylor “Mr Landlord”?  Here is my follow-up…

I have heard of these guys before, but as I stated in my Email, I have avoided the rental thing completely!  I think about it from time to time and then I remember back when I rented out one of my houses, and again when I had a building that was mixed apartments and a store front.  Just fleeting thoughts of doing it again reminds me that I need to focus on what I’m doing and maybe some day things will be different [in my mind].

So then I meet Anesia – through Tom Kish of all people.  I talked to her several times and we have exchanged dozens of Emails.  I got a copy of her book and forms and docs and stuff and the first thing that went through my mind was that she did most of this here in Wisconsin – you know that if you can do something in Wisconsin, you can do it anywhere – really!

I have read her book and have a better understanding of what it means to be a landlord – heck, I know what it means to be a business owner, a boss, a negotiator, and I even know what it means to be a drywaller – yikes!

How does her material compare to others – don’t know.  If I were to look at it like how do all of the SS programs compare?  Well they are all pretty much the same; although each one gives a little different perspective and that little bit all together from all of them make the big difference.  I do own material from most of the big Gurus, and dozens of others – some material going back to the early 80’s.  I even have Carleton Sheets program here twice!

So what does this mean?  Do you just choose one person and only buy or follow their material?  How do you choose?  I think that those of us that are really smart get copies of all that we can afford during whatever period and take little bits and pieces from each to make our whole system that we live with day by day.  At least that is what I do – don’t know about you.  I am a mutt in the dog world!  No single bread here – I’m a little bit of everything that I have read and like.

I received a follow-up Email questioning the statement that I bought Carleton Sheets twice!  The question was “Cassettes and CDs – right?”

Yes – CD’s are here in my library – the cover of the CD case fell off a long time ago – the cassettes went to my son.  I believe he is happy being an apartment dweller for now whereas my daughter bought her own home 3 years ago.  Go figure!  My son does run my other business with 5 employees so at least that is a good thing.

I have material by people that I am truly ashamed to say that I am familiar with – from the 80’s – their material is in a box somewhere – banished to long-term storage.

I enjoy reading books regardless if I agree with them or not.  I still come away with something and it always help me understand the whole market better.

Business – I can see that this is the biggest problem with people and their mind-set.
